Oldest Catholic Church in Mindanao (Caraga Church)

San Salvador del Mundo (Christ, the Saviour of the World) Church in Caraga, Davao Oriental is tagged as the oldest Catholic Structure in Mindanao. Just in time with the observance of the Holy Week, Laagan Adventures.com was able to attend the “Commemoration of the 7 Last Words” in the said Church, three Fridays ago.

excerpts from Simbahan.netSan Salvador del Mundo Church in Caraga, Davao Oriental was built by Pablo Pastells in 1884 when the Jesuits took charge of the spiritual administration of the town in 1871 from the Augustinian Recollects… The interior of the church has been much renovated that there are no longer traces of old, except for the hardwood posts and lateral walls. The old and dilapidated retablos and old roofings were replaced with new ones during preparations for its centennial celebrations.

The parish still treasures century-old records, as well as the antique bells. We also found an 1893 bell with the Jesuit Inscription on it, in Sitio Santiago Chapel (Pusan Point) which, locals say, is one of the three bells brought by the Spanish priests during the establishment of San Salvador del Mundo Church.

The structure of the Church is not like that of a typical old Baroque Architecture. What made it interesting is that it situates on a high limestone headland overlooking the breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. One reason why I encourage you to visit this historic structure in Mindanao. Caraga, Davao Oriental is about a 6-hour travel by land from Davao City.
